A hare lived in a forest. He had two friends—a monkey and an otter. They spent a lot of time together. One day, a hermit came to the forest. He was very tired and hungry.

एक जंगल में एक खरगोश रहता था। उसके दो दोस्त थे- एक बंदर और एक ऊद। उन्होंने एक साथ बहुत समय बिताया। एक दिन, एक साधु जंगल में आया। वह बहुत थका हुआ और भूखा था।

The otter was catching fish. The hermit went to him. “I’m hungry,”he said.
“I have a few fish,” said the otter.
“Please, take them.”
“But I don’t eat fish,” said the hermit.

ओटर मछली पकड़ रहा था। उपदेश उसके पास गया। “मुझे भूख लगी है,” उन्होंने कहा।
“मेरे पास कुछ मछलियाँ हैं,” ओटर ने कहा।
“कृपया, उन्हें ले लो।”
“लेकिन मैं मछली नहीं खाता,” हेर्मिट ने कहा।

“Have you anything else?”
“Sorry,” said the otter.”
“I have nothing else.”
The monkey was eating nuts. The hermit went to him.
“I’m hungry,” said thehermit.
“Could you give me some food, please?”

“क्या आपके पास और कुछ है?”
“क्षमा करें,” ओटर ने कहा।
“मेरे पास और कुछ नहीं है।”
बंदर नट खा रहा था। उपदेश उसके पास गया।
“मुझे भूख लगी है,” इर्मेट ने कहा।
“क्या आप मुझे कुछ भोजन दे सकते हैं, कृपया?”

“I have a few nuts,” said the monkey.
“Oh! but I want a lot of them,” said the hermit,
“I’m veryhungry.”
“I’m sorry. I have only a few,” said the monkey.
“I’ll ask the hare then,” said the hermit.
The hare was eating grass.
The hermit went to him.
“I’m so hungry,” said the hermit.
“Please, could you give me some food?”
“I have a lot of grass,” said the hare.
“But I don’t eat grass!” said the
hermit with a smile.
“Have you anything else?”
“No, I’m sorry,” said thehare.
“I’mvery hungry and I’mtired,” said the hermit.
“What shall I donow?”
The hare thought for a minute.
“Wait,” he said. “Please don’t go away.”
The hare brought some wood.
He struck two stones together and made a fire.
“You can eat me,” hesaid.
And jumped into the fire.

“मेरे पास कुछ नट्स हूं, ”हेर्मिट ने कहा,
“मैं बहुत भूखा हूँ।”
“मुझे माफ कर दो। मेरे पास कुछ ही है, ”बंदर ने कहा।
“मैं तो हरेक से पूछूंगा,” हेर्मिट ने कहा।
घास घास खा रहा था।
उपदेश उसके पास गया।
“मुझे बहुत भूख लगी है,” हेर्मिट ने कहा।
“कृपया, क्या आप मुझे कुछ भोजन दे सकते हैं?”
“मेरे पास बहुत घास है,” हर ने कहा।
“लेकिन मैं घास नहीं खा रहा हूँ!” कहा
एक मुस्कान के साथ hermit।
“क्या आपके पास और कुछ है?”
“नहीं, मुझे खेद है,” ने कहा।
हर्मिट ने कहा, “मुझे भूख लगी है और मैं परेशान हूं,”
“अब मुझे क्या करना चाहिये?”
एक मिनट के लिए सोचा था।
“रुको,” उन्होंने कहा। “कृपया दूर मत जाओ।”
हरि कुछ लकड़ी लाया।
उसने दो पत्थरों को एक साथ मारा और आग लगा दी।
“आप मुझे खा सकते हैं,” संकोच।
और आग में कूद गया।

But the fire did not burn him !
He looked out, but the hermit was not there.
An angel stood in front of him.
He took the hare in his arms and flew up. He put him on the Moon.
Look up at the Moon. You can still see the hare on it.

लेकिन आग ने उसे नहीं जलाया!
उसने बाहर देखा, लेकिन हेर्मिट वहाँ नहीं था।
एक देवदूत उसके सामने आ खड़ा हुआ।
उसने हरि को अपनी बाँहों में लिया और उड़ गया। उसने उसे चंद्रमा पर रख दिया।
चंद्रमा को देखें। आप अभी भी उस पर हरे देख सकते हैं।

Word Meanings – 

Hare (हेअर) = खरहा (खरगोश की एक प्रजाति)

Moon (मून) = चन्द्रमा, चाँद

Otter (ओटर) = उदबिलाव

A lot of (अ लॉट ऑफ़) = बहुत सारा  

A few (अ फ्यू) = थोड़ा सा

Together (टूगेदर) = साथ-साथ

Look at the pictures and statements carefully :The sentences given in the balloons can be repeated as below:

As you see, we make the following changes when we repeat somebody’s speech to someone else:
1. “ ” ( i.e.inverted commas) are removed.
2. ‘that’ is used after the ‘reporting verb’ (said)
3. ‘am’changes to was and ‘have’ to ‘had’ because the reporting verb is in the past tense.
4. Verbs used in present tense will be reported in past tense.

We now follow Shalini at school and home. She hears Geeta and Mohan talking at school. She then reports their conversation to her mother. One example is done for you. Do the rest of the exercise.
