Chhattisgarh’s Panthi Dance form is famous allover the world and has brought much acclaim to Indian folk art. The credit for popularizing Panthi Dance goes entirely to Devdas Banjare. Banjare has showcased the cultural heritage of his community,state and country and won several awards for his performance on the platforms of the world through his commitment.

छत्तीसगढ़ का पंथी नृत्य रूप दुनिया भर में प्रसिद्ध है और इसने भारतीय लोक कला की बहुत प्रशंसा की है। पंथी नृत्य को लोकप्रिय बनाने का श्रेय पूरी तरह से देवदास बंजारे को जाता है। बंजारे ने अपने समुदाय, राज्य और देश की सांस्कृतिक विरासत को प्रदर्शित किया है और अपनी प्रतिबद्धता के माध्यम से दुनिया के प्लेटफार्मों पर अपने प्रदर्शन के लिए कई पुरस्कार जीते हैं।

Devdas Banjare was born on 1st January 1937 in Sakra Village in Dhamtari District. His father’s name was Bodhram, but Phool Singh Banjare, whose surname he adopted, raised him. The boy was exposed to Panthi by a twist of fate. As a youth,Banjare was a gifted Kabbadi player. As a result ofan injury sustained during a match, he had to stop playing the game. Banjare then shifted his attention to Panthi dance. He had to practice hard ands trengthen his body because the dance require dstrength and vigour.

देवदास बंजारे का जन्म 1 जनवरी 1937 को धमतरी जिले के सकरा गाँव में हुआ था। उनके पिता का नाम बोधराम था, लेकिन फूल सिंह बंजारे, जिनका उपनाम उन्होंने अपनाया, ने उनका पालन-पोषण किया। भाग्य के मोड़ से लड़का पंथी के सामने आ गया। एक युवा के रूप में, बंजारे एक प्रतिभाशाली कबड्डी खिलाड़ी थे। एक मैच के दौरान चोट लगने के परिणामस्वरूप, उन्हें खेल खेलना बंद करना पड़ा। बंजारे ने फिर अपना ध्यान पंथी नृत्य पर स्थानांतरित कर दिया। उसे कठिन साधना करनी पड़ी और अपने शरीर को त्राटक करने लगा क्योंकि नृत्य के लिए तन्मयता और शक्ति की आवश्यकता होती है।

The Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) where Banjare worked as a dance teacher in the education department encouraged him to pursue his interest. Banjare brought much fame and honour to the BSP over a span of two decades.

The Panthi dance form belongs to the Satnami community in Chhattisgarh. The Satnamis consider Guru Ghasidasji as their Guru. Panthi dance is the medium throughwhich they honour their Guru. Banjare had said in an interview, “It is the prime responsibility of individuals to maintain their body and health so as to properly use god’s gift to do good and discharge their responsibilities in a correct manner”

In Panthi, the dancers perform various Mudras such as ‘Jai Sthamb’, ‘Dharti Pranam’ (invocation to the land) and ‘Phool Arpan'(offering flowers). The rich culture and legacy of the Satnami community is displayed through traditional costume sand more importantly the dancer’s energy. The ‘Gungroo’, the ‘Dhoti & Kurta’andthe ‘Kanthi'(garland made of Tulsi) comprise the costume of the dancer. Indi genous instruments such as the ‘Mandhar’ (Dhol) accompany the artistes in their performance.The artiste had worked with Habib Tanvir’s New Theatre and had toured severalcountries for performances. His role in ‘Charandas Chor’a film by Shyam Benegal.
